So earlier today I posted up this short on rolling for treasure in OSE and used the example of the Werebear (TT: C) for it. (Roll for Treasure in OSE | B/X D&D. #shorts - YouTube) I thought I’d expand on that video here.
Now due to the nature of the rolls that took place in that video, we didn’t get any Magic Items or Jewelry so let’s go over what the procedure is for if those rolls do end up awarding Jewelry or Magic Items.
Jewelry
Now in OSE this is pretty straightforward, if for treasure type C you had rolled 25 or lower on your d100 you’d then get to do a d4 roll much like gems to see how many pieces you get.
In OSE you simply would then roll 3d6 x 100 GP for each item you get. So let’s assume you rolled that you could get 2 pieces (on the d4 roll) the first being worth 800GP (3d6 coming up 8) and the second being worth 1200 GP (3d6 coming up 12).
Want to add some flavor to your OSE treasure rolls? Check out page 227 of the Rules Cyclopedia for detailed descriptions of jewelry. For example, a roll of 7 and 4 on the description chart could yield a delicate golden chain worth 800 GP and an exquisite brooch worth 1200 GP
There are similar charts in the Rules Cyclopedia for gems as well which makes them much more descriptive and interesting.
Magic Items
So if you pass the 10% check on Treasure Type C you get awarded 2 magical items. The first thing you need to do now is to check what kind of item you’re getting. Since we were fighting a werebear lets assume we are in Expert levels so we’d roll 2d100 and get the results 11 and 85. 11 is a “misc” item and 85 is a sword.
Looking at the misc item first we roll a d4 (3) to figure out what table we are rolling on (Misc Magic Items III) and then a d100 (86) to find out what we go, in this case it was the Net of Snaring which could be incredibly helpful.
As for the sword there is a pretty straight forward d100 table to roll on there (we got a 73) which would give us a Sword +1 Sharpness which is awesome and then you can roll a d6 to find out what size sword it is (we rolled a 4) in our case it’s a Normal sword.
Now you can also do a check to see the magical sword is sentient but I did an entirely different youtube short on that and a podcast episode detailing the steps for those if your interested.
What do you think?
Do you randomly roll your treasure for the players? If not why not? Leave me a note and let me know. And hey if you haven’t subscribed yet on youtube please do so - I’m hoping to have all the interviews up there by end of this month and then start making some other content for that platform as well.
