Farewell my (Dark) Knight
Kevin Conroy has died (11/30/1955 - 11/10/2022)
So anyone who knows me personally knows that Batman is my favorite comic book hero. That’s been true my entire life, I actually don’t remember a time when I even once considered Superman, Spiderman, Hulk, or any of the other heroes my friends were obsessed with even close to Batman.
Often I would be asked who my favorite Batman was, and without fail every time my answer would be Kevin Conroy. Batman the animated series & Batman Mask of the Phantasm are possibly some of the greatest works in the entire catalogue of Batman related media.
When he appeared on the Arrowverse event as the Batman from Earth-99 I was so happy for him. Kevin has played Batman more times than any other actor and for my money has set the bar incredibly high for all that follow him. Mark Hamill, who often played the Joker opposite of Kevin, once said that when it came to doing any voice acting for Batman properties the first thing he’d ask is “Is Kevin doing it?” and if the answer was yes Mark wouldn’t even bother reading the script saying, “If Kevin’s doing it, I’ll do it”.
Kevin Conroy had other roles than Batman of course. He appeared on many popular shows in small parts and extended stays on some of the big soap operas of the time as well. Yesterday on November 10th, 2022 Kevin’s battle with intestinal cancer ended. Kevin is survived by his husband Vaughn Williams, and millions of fans around the world who loved his work.
I sadly never got to meet him although a friend of mine did at a UK comic event and got a “POP” figure signed for me - the gag however is that the figure he signed was a figure of the Flash (yeah I have friends that are both amazing and jerks at the same time).
I’ll end this by saying:
