I recently discovered a game called Notequest - it is a Brazilian solo dungeon crawl game that, coupled with its “expanded world” addon, is incredibly deep, offering world hex exploration, domain play, and of course dungeon crawling. The system is straightforward and easy to play through and I thought I would share my first game session with you.
Chapter 1 - Tomb of the Dying Hero
Alebane is a dwarvish miner from Handor Keep deep in the Blackbrook Tips. He has finally come of age and his family gathered around him, cut the seam of his cloak, and sent him on a journey to gain a fortune worthy of returning to the family fire. Alebane will not be permitted to re-enter Handor until he has gathered 1000 coins.
Andor travels to the nearby human city of Glassop he hears rumors of a tomb to the north and sets with only a few torches, a pickaxe, and his cloak to keep him warm to begin his adventure.
After a few hours’ journey, Alebane found the entrance to the tomb, an engraving dedicating the tomb to the dying hero - worrisome. Despite unthinkable horrors and mounds of undead, Albane would fully explore this dungeon (although over the course of a few days to allow wounds to heal). With the great danger comes great opportunity for treasure and Alebane was rewarded handsomely for his persistence.
He now has 108 coins in his pocket, a razor-sharp Sickle of Destruction (d6+3 dmg), a helmet of strength (+1 dmg, +4HP), a breastplate of the Special Guard (+11hp), a Vampiric Axe (+1 HP per attack, d6 +1 dmg), a magical scroll of Lightning (6 dmg), a potion of luck (avoid traps), and two Potions of Fury (+2 dmg).
The undead skeleton king fell to his Axe and he headed back to Glassop for a rest and some celebration.
After a rest Alebane considered spending some of his coins for training in other titles and professions but decided against it at this time, he still feels very far away from being able to return home. Gathering his belongings he decides to head out to the east in search of more adventure….
Chapter 2 - Exploration and a Ruin
Alebane went out on foot to the east and quickly came across a fortress by the hated Elves, rather than deal with them he turned south and relished in the sight of whitecapped mountains overlooking a lake. Deciding to circle the lake Halbrand discovered the remains of a ruined palace that he was determined to come back and check out, a city of wicked goblins in the forest, another human city, and the hint of an underwater structure in the lake. Suffering through several rainstorms and an avalanche in the mountains Alebane takes some respite in the human city of Jinan and restocks his provisions with the intention of returning to the ruins.
Alebane completed the first level of the dungeon with ease, the Sickle of Destruction was crushing foes left and right. Alebane returned to Jinan sold off some goods and returned rested and ready to cleanse the evil from this place.
He soon found it in the depths of the palace, a Necromancer was leaning over a fresh corpse trying some dark arts. The fight went swiftly and Alebane defeated the necromancer and removed the head from the corpse just to be safe. His backpack full of treasure and feeling the need for a rest he headed back to Jinan- leaving some of the palace unexplored for future adventurers.
After selling his treasures Alebane now has the following inventory:
238 GP, The Halberd of Destruction (d6+5), Helm of Strength (+1 DMG, +4 HP), Breastplate of the Special Guard (+11HP), Centuraians Boots (+4HP), Amulet of the Dead (Ignore Undead Special), Leprechauns Ring (2x Gold from Chests), Fury Potion, HP Potion, Sickle of Destruction (d6 +3), Lamp, Scroll of Cold Ray, Scroll of Fireball.
Stay tuned for further adventures…
